AMMC AND MINISTRY OF WORKS SITE VISIT OF THE WATER TOWER AND FORT FINCASTLE

A site visit was conducted by the Antiquities, Monuments and Museum Corporation (AMMC) and Ministry of Works on February 8th, 2022, to determine how quickly and how best to begin the restoration of this historic landmark. The tour included discussions on how this massive revitalization project could benefit the country’s economy, boost tourism, and give this historic area a much-needed facelift.

The Water Tower is currently ranked as one of the top tourist attractions in The Bahamas. Reopening this structure has been eagerly anticipated since it was closed more than a decade ago. This work is expected to result in a world-class cultural attraction for Bahamians and tourists alike.

Lord Dunmore built Fort Fincastle, which is located on Bennett’s Hill, in the 1790s. Fort Fincastle takes its name from the second title of the governor, Viscount Fincastle. Originally a lighthouse, the fort overlooks Nassau’s downtown sector and Paradise Island; it was replaced by a new lighthouse on Paradise Island in September 1817.

Standing 126 feet tall and 216 feet above sea level, the Water Tower is one of the tallest points in Nassau. Apart from serving as a reservoir, the tower offers a stunning view of the city.
