Fort Fincastle was built around 1793 on Bennett's Hill, and visitors are frequently able to access it by foot by way of the Queen's Staircase. It was built by Lord Dunmore a Royal Governor (1787- 1796).

Designed in shape of the bow (front) of a ship, Fort Fincastle is named after Viscount Fincastle, the second title of Lord Dunmore. From the fort, one could see Nassau and Paradise Island, as well as the eastern entrance into Nassau Harbour. In addition to its two 24 pounders, two 32 pounders, two 12 pounders, and one howitzer, it was equipped with four cannons. The lighthouse was completed in  1817. However, Fort Fincastle was used as a signal station because of its higher elevation. It was last used as a signal station in 1954 for the arrival of Princess Margaret aboard the royal yacht, Britannia.
